Power down do's and dont's

I was recently told by the head of our maintenance crew that, from now on, he only wants us to E-stop the machines at the end of the day. That turning the "NC control off" and powering down completely (flipping the switch in the back) was bad for the machines... That doing so was like giving the machine a "mini heart attack".

Now, I've been around CNC equipment my whole life (43 years), and NEVER heard this before. Not powering down a machine and letting it draw power continuously seems nut's to me but before I called BS, I wanted to do some checking and get some opinions... I understand there are exceptions... Old Dino in the corner that you know will die if you turn her off, but come on.

Anyone?
