Hello all!

Very informative message board. I was referred by a local CNC repair shop in Augusta, GA.

I'm Jamie. I am the president of Lifeguard Fire Protection. We do design, fabrication, installation, and maintenance of water based fire sprinkler systems and are located in Gilbert, SC.

As far as machining goes, it is just a hobby of mine. I have picked up a Bridgeport mill, Jones & Lamson turrent lathe, and a EMCO CNC lathe over the past few years. I enjoy building things. The machining goes along with my welding/fabrication background that I got some years ago. I am a machining noobie and often look for advise from the old timers. Lucky for me, I have a few local friends that help me when I get stumped. I also have a degree in Electronics which allows me to buy broken equipment and fix it on the cheap.

I look forward to contributing what I can.

EMCO 340 "EMCOTURN" - can't get past memory checksum error

$

I recently acquired an EMCO 340 "EMCOTURN" with a Sinumerik 810t controller (I a almost sure this is the Siemens controller I have). I got the machine for scrap price by moving it from the building where it was located along with the hydraulic pump, transformer, and tooling. I hooked it up at my pipe fabrication shop where I have 3 phase power and figured out how to get the transformer correctly wired for voltage of this machine - (I made a diagram if some else needs it). When I powered it up, I got a checksum memory error and it would not go past this error.

  1. Since this machine had not had power in some time, I replaced the battery behind the CRT.
  2. I checked the lithium battery on the 6FX1126-2BA00 module and it showed a little over 3V so I left it alone.
  3. I swapped the memory modules in an attempt to figure out where the address of the bad EPROM was located. I suspected it was in the top module.
  4. I purchased some EPROMs that match those on the memory boards located in 6FX1120-7BAA01 and swapped them out but could not find a combination that works.
  5. I then called a local CNC repair person and he referred me to this site.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

I successfully posted on the introduce yourself section today, but when I tried to post to the machine specific section, it said that I had to wait until the post was approved. I first tried on Monday and after seeing nothing, I tried to post again today and got the same message. I though I might have done something wrong before so if my post shows up double, I apologize.

Thanks,
Jamie

Hello, physician looking for foam CNC machine purchase

$

Hello,

I'm a physician in the Midwest and have absolutely no background in CNC or milling in general. I've always 'made' things and thought that CNC milling is amazing work.

I have some ideas for medical equipment, and have decided to form a company... and herein lies the issue. Without more knowledge, I am likely to make MORE mistakes that I will make if I am able to learn. And therefore, I believe that one of the best places for me to learn is on a more 'unbiased' ie towards a particular mill, website such as this. I hope I am correct.

I need to learn as much about foam (softer memory foam) CNC milling as possible.

I know, I know... 'You can't machine it'... But I have heard otherwise and have an meeting in a couple weeks with a CNC milling machine company who is going to show me how they do it, so I suspect, it can be done.

So... when you read this and think, What in the heck does he think we do here? He can't 'do' that! Just realize, where I'm coming from, and perhaps we can both learn something.

Dad...

Needs, capabilities, costs, and reality... purchasing a new machine as a novice.

Hello all,

I am trying to learn as much as possible about CNC machining, (in a general way) in order to evaluate a company's machines and determine whether they are going to do the job that I need them to do.

First, yes, I wish I had an expert in the field who could be my liaison and lead me in the direction I need to go. Unfortunately, I have no idea where to find such a person nor do I have one at this point.

Second, I have a need, I believe there is a solution, therefore I wish to find the information and make a determination in as good of a way as possible. I recognize that as a novice... its like you all asking me how to do brain surgery. I'm not going to learn it all, nor do I need to (at this point). But, I do need to learn enough to know what questions I need to be asking and what I 'need' vs what is available.

So, here goes.

I have a need to shape foam. I know... there are tons of videos showing everyone doing everything. Well, not quite... my requirement is NOT available nor is it commonly done. Therefore, I am incumbent upon those teaching me and their knowledge. My need is to shape 'soft/memory foam'. All foam information, that I have been able to find, has been relegated to rigid foam of various forms. However, as I was tracking along the 'it can't be done' track... I was informed by a CNC milling machine company that it can be done, and they do it often.

This is wonderful for me, because it removes a significant part of my 'production line' model. However, it also has helped me to realize the holes in my knowledge, but also that the machines that they produce might be capable of doing the job I need, but that the cost of the machine might be more than I need to spend in order to make my final product.

So, my basic parameters are:

Mill a block of foam approximately 3x4x1' into a 3D shape. The shape is NOT intricate, but will be custom and change with each production. Most of it can be done with a simple 3 axis router and a long enough tool, however, there are 'undercuts' at a mild angle along the sides and front, which cannot be made in such a way. Therefore, I believe that I am likely to need a 5axis router. Its my opinion, that a router with a swivel head would be optimal, allowing for the block to remain in place. The 'cuts along the front/sides/back' would typically be a shallow angle of roughly 10degrees with some curvature to conform to some degree, to body parts.

Precision is not a significant concern. I would suspect tolerances within 1/8" or so would be completely adequate in the finished product. So I don't wish to spend the money for a 'precision machine'. But I also don't know how to determine this and for what I should be looking.

Other requirements... EASE OF USE!!! I cannot stress this enough.

My goal, is to have a machine which is capable of taking a 3D CAD image (of some sort) and make a block of foam resemble the image. I am not a programmer, nor do I wish to be. And at this point, my business can't handle the costs of the position. Many companies tell me this will not be a problem, and if I can get the 'part' in a 3D model file, 'their machine can make it'. I don't know the reality of this statement, and this is another thing I need to understand.

Basically, I need a machine, that can take a block of soft foam and 'mill' it into very similar, but custom varied shapes, over and over again. The 3D model will be very similar in almost all ways, but the variations will be critical to the function of the product.

So... that's 'what I need'... and any direction you can point me towards or any information you can provide, or anything you can point out that I should know, be thinking about, or recognize would be appreciated.

840D Sinumerik NCU - 1-0-9 on Display

Hello, I'm looking to hopefully get some help diagnosing a Siemens 840D NCU that we just replacement. The board number is 6FC5357-0BB33-0AE1 and when we installed it, the 7 segment display gave us a 1-0-9 error. It also gave us a static "3" at one point, and I can't seem to find anything in the manual that shows the different meanings of these codes. I found something saying that a 6 was the ready state, but nothing about these other readings. Any help would be appreciated.

Mori AL-2 Fanuc 10 Pulse coder disconnect SV015 error. Help Please

This is an old Lathe, 1984-5. I get the error only in tool change x and y are not moving. I have checked cables and connections and all checks out good. It seems to always happen as the turret clunks its way around just as it gets to the stop position and then it stops just past the position. I think the error causes it to not stop. I can manually change tool positions all day long and never get the error.
We are lost...anyone looking for an old Mori with low hours. I would be great full for any help.

master cam 3.10 Mill for Dos has a cursor that moves short increments then the menu

$

I am trying to get a Master Cam 3.10 for dos program to get the mouse cursor movements to correspond to the spacing on the various menus that Master Cam presents. I would think that during setup, that are adjustments that can be made to either the Menu spacing or the size of the jump when the mouse is moved. The mouse jumps are smaller than the spacing of the menu. ie. 10 mouse movements moves 8 spacing down the selection menu. If menu and jumps were set correcly, the Correct selection on the screen would be aligned with the cursor position and the Master Cam then would be easier to use. Any suggestion on how to solve this problem

thank you

Fanuc 31i model B5 parameter backup

Can anyone tell me the parameter backup procedure for a Fanuc 31i Model B5? We have an Onsrud 5-axis router & I want to have a backup on file. I've tried getting the procedure from Onsrud tech support, but their only response is "Currently the only manual we have on backups is for internal use only. I am looking into what solution we can offer at an end-user level, but the engineer I need to speak with is out of the office this week.". I've sent reminder emails asking if their engineer is in this week, but all I'm getting back is the sound of crickets.
We only received the operators manual, which doesn't have any info on backup procedures either.
Any help is greatly appreciated.

Several alarms but lets start with 430.....

Hi to all ! this is my first post here and I'm hoping it helps me to NOT call service dept ;)

I am running a hardinge/bridgeport XV 710 with oi-mc control. I have been running program on 4th axis and it was running fine. I came in the next day to a series of alarms.

430- servo motor overheat
436- soft phase- invalid data in coder
364 - more pulse coder issues
365-368 pulse coder errors

I shut it down and reboot to get this alarms......

368- comm alarm from pulse coder- this comes on by itself..no other alarms.

I have removed and unplugged rotary to inspect cables, hookups, etc. When I put it back on, suprisingly, it worked. I used it for half day and came in today to find all the errrors again. Everytime I turn on/off at control it seems o alternate alarms. Also the diagnostic 200-204 say anything from bad battery to overheating to overloaded to serial pulse coder dfective to pulse coder cable is defective...... I don't even know where o begin.

I'm gussing that it's one thing that is generating it's own alarm , but then causing the rest.
